Old Wooden Bowls

I have a weakness for old wooden bowls. I am the first to say we need to save the
trees and forests. The bowls I’m talking about were made over a hundred + years
ago...and they are not only beautiful but show a craft and skill that was very important
at that time. It was part of our history. Part of our treasure. They are not the smooth
lovely bowls we think of today but these hand carved vessels are so exquisite and
every time I look at them I imagine someone’s hands working hour upon hour to make
such beautiful rustic pieces.

The long bowl...

You can see the rough carving...

 It’s a tall bowl...

Here is the edge carved and chiseled to fashion a handle...

The inside shows what part of the tree was used...here lies the tree's history...

Look at the detail...!

You can see the history, every nuance...

This beautiful one is a lower, rounder bowl...

It is especially unique because of the carved handle which is not an attachment...
the bowl and handle are one hand sculpted piece. Can you imagine the work that went
into making this?

The bottom shows the detail...

The inside of the bowl again shows the labor...and the tree...

Can’t you just picture the skilled, rugged hands at work...?

This is a much smaller bowl...

I use it to hold fruit during the summer and Christmas decoration in the winter.
Again, another skilled craftsman showed his(or her)talent...

The bottom shows the detail, and it looks like it was very roughly signed with someone
carving their name into the wood.  I wonder what that person was thinking about as
they made this bowl...

Just for fun I thought I would show you the different size pinecones I keep in the bowls...
quite a difference!

I hope you enjoy seeing these bowls. I know I do.

So nice running into you on Sunday. These pieces are marvelous. You've always had a
wonderful sense of style and understatement. Let's get together
when I return from my trip.
